Navigation Skills

6 Febraury 2016
Inbetween storms Henry and Imogen, we were lucky enough to have planned our navigation skills event on the most benign day !

Mountain hare Taking over the meeting room in the Pentland Outdoor Centre, myself and a group of keen outdoor enthusiasts went through some theory stuff. After getting to know each other and plan the day, we started on the graft. Maps, compasses, timing estimates and lots more. Of course, it's the compass bit that most folk get excited about and everybody seemed to take to it quickly. It took around a couple of hours to got through everything, then folk headed to the Apres Cafe for a bite to eat before heading outside.

Up at the Midlothian Snowsports centre, we met up again, everyone keen to put in practice what we'd just learned. Pacing, timing, relocation, back-bearings and more were gone through, all on the way up to below Caerketton's crags. 'Anyone fancy getting to thhe summit of Allermuir ?' I beckoned. A fairly unanimous reply of 'Yes' and uphill we went, relaxed in the knowledge we'd covered the topics aimed for. The summit is a cracking place to take in some views.

Back down we were overtaken by a group of school kids hill running - some looking pretty knackered ! We walked at a more leisurely pace, taking in the views and enjoying some craic.

A few more photos are up on Flickr !
