Navigation in Perthshire

25 March 2017
A day's course learning navigation skills in the hills above Pitlochry and Killiecrankie. Emma was leading...

Heading up Starav We began our day in Pitlochry's Scout Hall and after an informative 2 hour indoor session learning about different maps, scales, features and how to take a compass bearing we were ready to head out on the hill to put it all into practise.

We re-grouped at Killiecrankie and headed up to the foot of Ben Vrackie starting with finding out about map setting and working out our 100m double pacing before heading up the hill. We used a combination of man-made features and compass bearings before adding in timings and distance whilst navigating to contour features such as ring contours and changes of slope. The afternoon flew by! We reached the high point of the 633m summit of Meall na h-Aodainn Moire above Loch a'Choire and the view was tremendous - all the way to Ben Nevis, Glencoe and the Black Mount.

We spent the descent consolidating our skills with everyone feeling much more confident about using maps and compasses by the end of the day.
