Beinn a'Ghlo

30 October 2017
A day hiking up the 3 Munro summits on Beinn a'Ghlo above Blair Atholl. Richard Kermode was leading....

The forecast was promising as I met up with Diane, Eileen, Emma, Laura and Shona for our walk up Beinn a'Ghlo. We were all excited about the prospect of a bright crisp autumn day as we chatted along the land rover track to start our walk. It was a cold start and the layers were soon being changed as we started the steep ascent of Carn Liath. As we gained height the wind found us and so did some showers making for a Baltic feel on our first summit though we did get views of the rest of our walk in the distance. We made good use of the large Cairn to hide behind for a snack and then set off as it was far to cold to linger anywhere for too long.

It was on the approach to the summit of Braigh Coire Chruinn-bhalgain that we entered the cloud and as we did a familiar figure came running towards us... it was Steven out for a speedy traverse of the mountain and to say hello! Given how cold it was he left us at the top to carry on and we descended through the mist to emerge at our beallach in some relative shelter for some much needed lunch. Whilst enjoying a rest the last summit Carn nan Gobhar came out of the cloud and we met Steven again on his way down.

We reached the summit to enjoy views of the Cairngorms with a white dusting of snow as well as meeting some of the people we had seen along the way on our walk. It was still very cold on the tops and we were soon on our way back to the beallach to head down into the shelter of the corrie. On our way we spotted a group of 20 Ptarmigan flying through the boulders and then in the corrie storm very big stags bellowing across the hills at each other.

The route back is fairly boggy until you reach the recently upgraded path that makes the walk back to the land rover track much easier and faster it's a delight. We were now enjoying sunshine and cool winds with lovely views as we wandered back to the cars to finish a beautiful day out in the hills.
