Navigation course in the Pentlands

11 February 2018
Navigation course in the Pentlands in cold winter conditions with blue skies and fine views. Steven was leading....

It's full-on winter in the Pentlands - what better time to have a navigation course ?

I met up with David, Kirsten, Brian, Laura, Kenny and Lindsay at our office in Edinburgh on a cold Sunday morning. We went through the basics of maps, then compared several different type. On to the compass and then pacing/timing, it was then time for lunch.

The practical part of the course was to take place in the northern Pentlands, just south of Edinburgh. We met up in the Midlothian Snowsports Centre, all wrapped up and prepared for the cold winds that funnelled down from the hills. The ground was icy - should we have worn crampons ? - there was evidence people had used them earlier in the day. Working the techniques learnt in the classroom and throwing a few more - we hiked our way up to the summit of Allermuir, our efforts rewards with some cracking views.

A great day learning loads and having some good craic !
