Navigation Skills

Navigation Skills in the Pentlands, 10 February 2109

A blog post from one of our mountain adventures in the Scottish hills and mountains. A navigation skills course held in the Pentlands run on a chilly Sunday morning. Steven Fallon was leading.

Navigation Skills in the Pentlands

Our group met at our office in Argyle Place in Edinburgh on a bright and chilly Sunday morning. The group by chance was all female who all seemed to bond together as a team pretty quickly. In our 'classroom' part of the course we looked in detail at maps and compasses, then other topics like navigation order, the "4 Ds" and GPSs before breaking for lunch.

Although there are lots of good places to eat around our office, Cobbs Cafe at the foot of the Pentlands is the place I recommend - it's near where we start the practical part of the course, the food and atmosphere is great and most importantly, it's above Craigdon Mountain Sports - so if any new gear needs buying, this is the place to do it. And one person in the group fancied treating herself to a new compass.

Unfortuantely, Cobbs was very busy today, I suspect that a ski event at Midlothian Snowsports Centre was causing this, which subsequently meant there was a delay in getting started on our practical part of the course. But once we met up, everyone was raring to go ! We navigated our way up towards Allermuir Hill, looking at landforms including coires, knoll and crags on the way. Lots of practice on the techniques we learned in the classroom and a few other skills were thrown in including re-section and back-bearings working as a team. Just below Allermuir, we finally came out of the shade and into the sun - ah, nice ! It had been pretty cold up to this point !

Back down, everyone said their goodbyes and later that evening, three of the group had already booked onto other events in our calendar !

A great day, lots of fun with a lovely group of folk.
