Navigation Skills in the Pentland Hills, 5 February 2020

A blog post from one of our mountain adventures in the Scottish hills and mountains. A day spent learning navigation skills in the northern hills of the Pentlands, Steven Fallon was leading.

Navigation Skills in the Pentland Hills

February was proving pretty cold, but in between the snowy weekends, our mid-week navigation was held in fine conditions on the grassy covered slopes of the northern Pentlands by Hillend.

Our group met at our office in Argyle Place in Edinburgh on a chilly mid-week morning for the 'classroom' part of the course. We looked in detail at maps and compasses, then other topics like navigation order, the "4 Ds" and GPSs with a brief mention of What3Words !

After break for lunch - most of the group had gathered in Cafe 360 in Midlothian Snowsports Centre which has a great view right onto Caerketton Hill - we all met up ready for the practical part of the day. It was pretty cold, everyone was well prepared, but fingers crossed we'd be warming up once headed off ! We navigated our way uphill, looking at landforms including coires, knoll and crags on the way. Lots of practice on the techniques we learned in the classroom and a few other skills were thrown in including re-section and back-bearings working as a team. Bit-by-bit we made our way onto the summit of Allermuir Hill, taking in the fine views all around.

Next event is in mid-March !
