Strathfarrar Munros and Maoile Lunndaidh
Guided hillwalking days in the North-West Highlands
Designated a National Nature Reserve in 1977, Glen Strathfarrar is a quiet place, virtually traffic free and very beautiful.
A gate at the head of the glen restricts visitors to a small number, therefore calmness is guaranteed and wildlife is plentiful ! We're here for 2 days, aiming up the high and rugged terrain to bag 5 Munros including Sgurr a'Choire Ghlas, Sgurr Fhuar-thuill and Maoile Lunndaidh.

Outline of event »
Day 1 : Strathfarrar Munros
A hike on a circular route and high crests to bag 4 Munros above Glen Strathfarrar
Summits : | Sgurr na Ruaidhe, Carn nan Gobhar, Sgurr a' Choire Ghlais, Sgurr Fhuar-thuill |
Grading : | moderate day |
Stats : | Ascent : 1600m, distance : 17km, time : 7-9 hours |
The mountains to the north of Glen Strathfarrar form a chain of 4 Munros.
Sgurr a'Choire Ghlas is the dominant mountain in the range and the views from its summit are stunning !
After meeting at the end of the public road by Struy in Strathghlas, we'll drive along the narrow road through the Natural Nature Reserve.
Initially on a fine track, then a stalker's path, we'll hike at a leisurely pace northwards and onto a high ridge.
Hopefully the westerly wind will be light enough to allow us to walk from east to west, therefore having superb views before us for our time on the ridges.
We'll head over the 4 Munro peaks of Sgurr na Ruaidhe, Carn nan Gobhar, Sgurr a'Choire Ghlas and Sgurr Fhuar-thuill.
A gentle descent down a stalker's path returns us to the roadside for a stroll back to our vehicles.

Day 2 : Maoile Lunndaidh
A hike on a fine path following the shores of Loch Monar to reach this remote mountain
Summits : | Maoile Lunndaidh |
Grading : | demanding day |
Stats : | Ascent : 1350m, distance : 22km, time : 8-10 hours |
Maoile Lunndaidh is a remote and vast mountain lying in the heart of Monar.
Regardless of approach, there is a fair amount of leg-work required to gain the summit of this Munro.
But the views from the top make the effort worth-while !
We meet as yesterday and drive along Glen Strathfarrar, this time to the dam at the head of Loch Monar.
Initially on a fine track, then stalker's paths and bridges, we'll hike at a leisurely pace northwards and onto the high vast plateau crest of Maoile Lunndaidh with a lonely cairn on its summit.
We can return back to the dam the same way, or for a change of scenery, take an alternative route through Coire Fionnarach.

Experience & fitness needed »
Moderate hillwalking days.
To join this guided event, we ask that you :
- have a good level of fitness and stamina
- have done some hillwalking
- are comfortable hiking for 7 hours plus
- had exposure to British mountain weather or similar
The routes have good paths lower down with generally grassy slopes leading to varied terrain higher up.
Our first day's hike is classed as 'moderate', follows some fine stalker's paths and has some short sections bouldery ground on the upper slopes of Sgurr a'Choire Ghlas.
The second day's hike is classed 'demanding' primarily due to the long walk along the shores of Loch Monar.
