Driving along the A832 west of Dingwall, the summits of Sgurr a' Mhuilinn and its neighbour Sgurr a'Choire-rainich are the first significant hills viewed after turning west from Garve, rising from the vast moorland landscape of Strath Bran.
Although Meallan nan Uan can be approached from Strath Bran, with no paths over the vast moorlands, a hike from this direction can't really be recommended.
A more straightforward and shorter approach begins from the east by Strathanmore in Strathconon where faint paths lead up the hill's lower slopes and to Loch Coire a' Mhuilinn. A route to Sgurr a' Mhuilinn will most likely also include a hike up nearby Meallan nan Uan and faint paths can be found connecting these Corbetts.
