Sgurr an Lochain, a striking, conical peak when seen from most angles, has a well-defined crest with smooth slopes sweeping southward. From its summit, a northern shoulder divides the rugged northern slopes into two dramatic corries, one of which cradles a sizeable lochan that gives the mountain its name.
Many hillwalkers tackle this Munro as part of a traverse along the South Glen Shiel Ridge. This traverse can be split into shorter segments, with Sgurr an Lochain lying in the ridge's western section, with the easiest access from Glen Shiel via its neighbouring peak, Creag nan Damh.
