Stob an Aonaich Mhoir is the highest point on a long and wide ridge travelling above the eastern shores of the southern half of Loch Ericht. The mountain is grass-covered in the main, with steep west facing slopes that drop 500m to the loch below.
The nearest roadside, as the crow flies, to Stob an Aonaich Mhoir is the A9 by the Pass of Drumochter. However, as no tracks or paths head to Stob an Aonaich Mhoir from this direction, the easiest route actually begins from Loch Rannoch to the south, where an excellent estate track travels to Corrievarkie Lodge on the banks of Loch Ericht. Most hillwalkers will opt to cycle up this road to its highest point, leaving a hike of just over 1km to Stob an Aonaich Mhoir's summit.
